Our website has undergone a facelift and is now 100% mobile web compatible. While redesigning our website we decided to add a blog, where you will be able able to read all about our ponies in a bit more detail and where we will pass on useful tips and advice from our 33 years experience in Miniature Shetland Ponies. The blog posts are written by Jodie, Lorraine's daughter.
Recently Lorraine was nominated on facebook to post photos of her 5 most influential/special ponies over 5 days. And we thought this would be perfect for our very first blog as it will tell you a little more about where we came from... so here it goes.
Day 1/5 Edendale Golden Princess
With a love of all animals especially equines I was drawn to Shetland ponies in 1981 after a couple of stud visits and lots of research we went to the 1982 Fell and Shetland pony sale in Cumbria. It was love at first sight when I spotted Twinkle a tiny liver chestnut filly foal her reg name Edendale Golden Princess by Bogs Fireman. We paid 200gns for her people thought we were crazy at the time but we had to have her she was adorable the friendliest little filly I was hooked. We went to the Kerswell Stud for my first stallion and bought the newly licenced 2yr old Colt Kerswell Relko by Ron of North Wells. Twinkle prooved to be an excellent match for Relko producing a beautiful liver chestnut filly foal in 1985 Plumtree Poppy we named her.
Reading Shetland Pony sale was the place to buy and sell ponies so we entered Poppy into the sale being fairly new to Shetlands I was amazed at the interest shown in our little filly and was delighted when Tony and Jane Dennis Kerswell Stud bought her she made 600gns and we shared top price of the day with the Parlington Stud .... I will never forget what Tony Dennis said to me that day "she is the best pony here today" I was very proud what an accolade for me so new to Shetlands.
We kept Twinkles next filly another liver chestnut Plumtree Pretty Peaches she's still with us aged 30 now a little stiff on her legs at times but still enjoying her life.
Plumtree Amy another Twinkle filly went to Reading in 1988 again bought by Kerswell Stud we were 2nd highest price foal on the day.
As an 8yr old Twinkle was very ill and spent 6 weeks in Leahurst Hospital Liverpool we thought we would loose her but they got her better thank goodness, when we went to pick her up the Professor who had been in charge of her care told us she had more attention than any other equine on the place I think everyone there had fallen in love with her.
Such a sweet pony so friendly she used to whinny at me whenever she saw me it was the saddest of days when we had her put to sleep at the age of 30 ... She leaves behind daughters, granddaughters and a licenced stallion here at the stud.
I do miss her I always will she was one of the best "My Twinky"
She certainly put Plumtree Stud on the map.
2/5 Plumtree Patrick
My 2/5 has to be my first home bred licenced stallion the gorgeous Plumtree Patrick 31inch liver chestnut born in 1994 ...... Out of my beautiful Twinkle he was a keeper as soon as I set eyes on him.
The older breeders amongst us will remember how daunting the stallion assessment scheme was back then, I put Patrick forward as a 3yr old I opted for the assessment to be done at home rather than at a centre, I was so nervous on the day the 2 panel judges were Sheila Edwards and Diana Stavely accompanied by the Society appointed vet. To say I was thrilled when Patrick passed with flying colours was an under statement .... Diana said to me he was the best they had seen in a while and I should have taken him to a centre so people could see what the judges were looking for in a stallion.... It was one of the best days my lovely little boy now a licenced stallion.
Patrick has produced some fabulous foals for us and was shown with success in his day.
A lovely gentle stallion so easy and very kind he is 22 years young now and still fighting fit.
3/5 Plumtree Polka Dot
My beautiful mare Plumtree Polka-Dot ......
The only filly out of her dam my liver chestnut Plumtree Pretty Peaches .... Dots grandam my foundation pony Edendale Golden Princess "Twinkle" Dot is also related to my stallion Plumtree Patrick.
Dot is 15 now can't believe how time flys by ? She has been successfully shown and has bred me some outstanding foals, a very kind loving mare always admired by everyone who sees her. Dot is expecting a foal in late April.
4/5 Brandeston Rupert
Day 4/5 Has to be my beautiful stallion Rupert .....
Not bred by me but bought as a yearling Brandeston Rupert by Kerswell Rum ... Grandsire Tyros Storm of Lambridge ....
Licenced the old way as a 2year old he is a tank on legs with a beautiful head and temperament to die for, shown successfully in his younger days.
Rupert has had a great influence on the stud He has sired some outstanding foals in fabulous colours.
We just love him to bits.
5/5 - Every Pony!
It's difficult to pick my number 5 special pony as each and every one of the ponies here at Plumtree are very special ..... So here's a selection of some of the beautiful foals we have bred.
